1 · Input data
The dead load of a structure to ASCE/SEI 7-22 Section 3.1 — the weight of the structure itself together with everything permanently attached to it. Enter each element of the structure on the basis that suits it, and the page returns the weight of each element, the total D, and the dead load per unit area of the surface it acts on. This page prints no unit weight of any material. Chapter 3 contains no table of them: §3.1.2 requires the actual weights of the materials of construction, and values approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction where they are not known. Table 3.2-1, the only table in the chapter, is lateral soil load. Every unit weight below is therefore yours, and the page records it as you entered it. A row you leave completely blank is not used; a row with anything in it is an element, and the page refuses it by name if a value it needs is missing. Press Compute D when the card is complete.

The elements of the structure
Each row is entered on one of five bases. Choose the basis first and the three value cells change what they ask for: a stated weight uses one cell, a pressure over an area uses two, a unit weight over a volume or a length of section uses three, and a count uses two. A cell the chosen basis does not use is labelled “not used for this basis”.

2 · Solution
No solution yet — enter at least one element in the card above and press Compute DL. This card stays empty until a solution is computed, and it is emptied again the moment any input changes, so a displayed solution always belongs to the inputs on screen.
