One connection, to AISC 360-22, Chapter J — Design of Connections. Choose what is being checked and the page computes every limit state that applies, naming the clause and the table behind every coefficient. A welded joint uses J2.1a and J2.2a (effective areas), J2.2b with Table J2.3 (the minimum effective throat of a partial-joint-penetration groove weld) and Table J2.4 (the minimum size of a fillet weld), J2.3a (plug and slot welds), and J2.4 with Table J2.5 (the available strength of welded joints: the weld metal and the base metal, the directional increase kds of Eq. J2-5, and the fillet shear row with its footnote [d] to J2.4(a)). A bolt group uses J3.7 and Table J3.2 (nominal stress of fasteners and threaded parts: shear and tension rupture, and the 83.3% end-loaded reduction of footnote [c]), J3.8 (combined tension and shear, with F′nt and its cap), J3.9 and J3.10 with Table J3.1 (minimum bolt pretension) and Table J3.3 (nominal hole dimensions) (slip resistance and the ksc factor), and J3.11a (the bearing and tear-out pair, Eqs. J3-6a to J3-6f). The affected element uses J4.1, J4.2 and J4.3 (tensile yielding and rupture, shear yielding and rupture, and block shear of Eq. J4-5). LRFD carries the φ of each clause and ASD its Ω. This page checks one connection: it does not size the member, and it does not check spacing, edge distance or hole dimensions (J3.3 to J3.6). A field the chosen connection does not read is optional; a field it does read is required, and Solve names every one that is missing or malformed.
The connection
The weld — J2 (used when a welded joint is checked)
The bolt group — J3 (used when a bolt group is checked)
Slip-critical — J3.9 and J3.10 (used when a slip-critical connection is checked)
The affected element — J4 (optional; each row appears when its areas are entered)
A welded joint reads only the weld fields; a bolt group reads only the bolt fields, and a slip-critical connection additionally reads the slip fields. The J4 areas are optional and independent: enter an area and its limit state appears, leave it blank and it does not. The page never invents a value for a field it was not given, and it refuses a value outside what Chapter J permits rather than approximating it.
